What a zombie process is
A zombie process is a process that has completed its execution but still has an entry in the system's process table. In other words, the program has finished running, yet a small record of it remains, waiting to be cleaned up. The process is no longer doing any work, but it has not been fully removed from the system's list of processes, which is why it is called a zombie.
Why the entry remains
When a process finishes, the operating system keeps a brief record of it so that the process that started it - its parent - can retrieve information about how it ended, such as its exit status. Until the parent reads this information, the finished process remains in the table as a zombie. The lingering entry exists specifically to pass along the result of the completed process.
Cleaning up the zombie
Normally, the parent process reads the exit status of its finished child, and at that point the system removes the leftover entry, and the zombie is gone. This cleanup is a routine part of how processes end. In well-behaved systems, zombies are created briefly and cleared almost immediately, so they are a normal and temporary part of a process's life rather than a problem.
When zombies accumulate
A zombie becomes a concern only if its entry is never cleaned up, which can happen if the parent fails to collect the child's exit information. Because each zombie still occupies a slot in the process table, a large number of uncleaned zombies could, in principle, use up entries. In practice, systems have ways of handling this, but accumulating zombies can indicate a program that is not cleaning up properly.
A harmless state, usually
Despite the ominous name, a single zombie process is harmless: it uses almost no resources and is simply waiting to be cleared. The term captures the idea of something that has finished yet still lingers. Understanding zombies helps explain some of the entries you might see when inspecting a system's processes, and reassures that they are usually a normal, fleeting state.
Why it matters
The zombie process is a memorable concept in how operating systems manage processes. Understanding what a zombie process is - a finished process whose record lingers until it is collected - clarifies part of the lifecycle of a process. For anyone learning about operating systems, it is a valuable and often surprising concept to understand.
