Turning binary data into plain text characters.

What Base64 is

Base64 is a way of encoding binary data into text using a limited set of characters. It takes data that may contain any byte values and represents it using a group of readable characters, so that the data can be stored or transmitted through systems that are designed to handle text. The name refers to the fact that it uses a base of 64 different characters to represent the data.

Why text encoding is needed

Some systems and protocols are built to handle text rather than arbitrary binary data, and passing raw binary through them can cause problems. Base64 solves this by converting binary data into a text form made only of safe, common characters. This encoded text can then travel through text-based channels without being corrupted, and be decoded back into the original binary data at the other end.

How Base64 represents data

Base64 works by taking groups of bits from the original data and mapping them onto its set of 64 characters, with each character standing for a small chunk of the data. By using only this fixed set of characters, the encoded output avoids the kinds of bytes that might be mishandled by text-oriented systems. The process is reversible, so the original data can always be recovered.

The trade-off in size

One consequence of Base64 encoding is that the encoded text is larger than the original binary data. Because it uses a limited set of characters to represent the data, more characters are needed than the number of original bytes. This increase in size is the price paid for the ability to move binary data safely through text-based systems, a trade-off that is often worthwhile.

Where Base64 is used

Base64 is used in many places where binary data needs to be embedded in or sent through text. It commonly appears when data such as images or attachments must be included in text-based formats or messages. Whenever binary information has to coexist with text, Base64 provides a reliable way to carry it, which is why it is so widely encountered in computing.

Why it matters

Base64 is a fundamental encoding used throughout computing to move binary data through text-based systems. Understanding what Base64 is - a way of representing binary data as text characters - clarifies how data travels safely across many channels. For anyone working with data or the web, it is a valuable concept to understand.
