Earth at night seen from space, representing 4X strategy games.

Explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate.

What a 4X game is

A 4X game is a strategy game in which players build and lead an empire. The name comes from its four core goals: explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. The term was coined by writer Alan Emrich in a 1993 preview of the space strategy game Master of Orion. Civilization is the most famous example, alongside games such as Stellaris, Endless Space, and Age of Wonders.

The four Xs

Exploring means scouting the map to find resources, rivals, and opportunities. Expanding means founding new cities or colonies to claim territory. Exploiting means developing that territory, building infrastructure, and making efficient use of resources to grow stronger. Exterminating means confronting and defeating rival empires, whether through war or other forms of competition. Together these create a sweeping arc from a single settlement to a great power.

Empire management and technology

4X games ask players to manage many systems at once: economies, populations, production, research, and military forces. A technology tree lets you research new discoveries that unlock buildings, units, and abilities, steering your empire's development over the long run. Balancing short-term needs against long-term goals, such as choosing between building an army and investing in science, is central to the strategy.

Diplomacy and paths to victory

Not every rival must be defeated in battle. Many 4X games include diplomacy, letting players form alliances, trade, and negotiate peace. They also offer several ways to win, such as scientific achievement, cultural influence, or economic dominance, alongside military conquest. This variety lets players pursue different strategies and play styles, and it makes each match unfold differently.

Turn-based and real-time

Most 4X games are turn-based, giving players time to think through each decision, which suits the genre's depth and complexity. Some, particularly in the grand strategy style of Stellaris, play in real time with the option to pause. Matches can be long, often lasting many hours across several sessions, and a famous joke among fans is the urge to play just one more turn.

The bottom line

A 4X game is a deep strategy game about growing an empire through exploration, expansion, exploitation, and conquest. With technology trees, diplomacy, and multiple paths to victory, it rewards long-term planning and careful management. From Civilization's sweep of human history to empires spread across the stars, the genre offers some of the most absorbing and replayable experiences in gaming.
