'Lanterns' Showrunners Defend Their Major Change to Hal Jordan's Origin

The change they made

Adapting a beloved comic is a minefield, and Lanterns co-creators Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and longtime comics writer Tom King leaned all the way in. Having already killed off Earth's most famous Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, the show used its penultimate episode to retcon his origin. In DC lore, Hal's test-pilot father Martin died in a crash; 'The Jordan Boys Legacy' reveals that his death was actually a suicide, a change that recolors Hal's whole journey from test pilot to supposedly fearless, ring-bearing protector.

Lindelof: 'like handling plutonium'

Speaking to TheWrap (as reported by The A.V. Club), Lindelof framed the creative risk starkly, likening tinkering with canon to handling plutonium. His guiding question, he said, was 'How do I expand upon the existing canon without completely and totally violating it?', with the goal of 'recontextualizing' Hal rather than fundamentally changing him. He put it in franchise terms: 'Is Batman still Batman if his parents aren't killed? Is Superman still Superman if there's a Krypton? Is Hal Jordan still Hal Jordan if his dad didn't die in a test flight? Probably not.' But, he added, playing it totally safe leaves 'no fun and creativity and originality,' so 'you simultaneously sort of have to start to kind of iterate.'

Kyle Chandler on the darker backstory

Star Kyle Chandler, who plays both Hal and the artificial 'Halogram' construct that delivers the revelation, welcomed the added depth. 'It's more to build into the character. It's more history. It's more darkness. It's more pathology of the character,' the Friday Night Lights actor said, noting how much his character carries: 'Hal had a pretty rough coming up in the world... knowing about my family's past, but look at his childhood!' Mundy noted the change was always the plan: before filming, Chandler 'knew the pain his character held' so he could weave it into his performance.

Why it matters

Lanterns has drawn a largely positive response from fans and critics for its grounded, character-focused take on superheroics, and the origin change is a bet that recontextualizing a hero can deepen him without erasing what makes him recognizable. It is also a notable case of a high-profile DC adaptation openly reworking canon and then publicly making the creative case for it. With the change now out in the open, attention turns to how it pays off. The Lanterns season finale airs this Sunday on HBO.
