'Lanterns' Expands With an Exclusive Music Video for 'Away from Home (Rushville's Lament)'

Lanterns goes beyond the screen

Lanterns has become the DCU's latest success, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart in a dual-timeline story: 2026 John investigating the death of Hal, intercut with 2016 Hal making John's life difficult. As Collider exclusively shared, the show is now expanding its world with a music video for 'Away from Home (Rushville's Lament),' the song featured in Episode 5.

A lament from the townspeople's side

Composed by Stephanie Economou and performed with Ari Mason and Wayne Ingram, the song is written not as a heroic Green Lantern anthem but from the perspective of the people of Rushville, whose lives are upended by the two 'space cops.' It weaves in iconic Green Lantern lore, lines like 'Cast your emerald glow' and 'In the blackest night', while capturing the show's rustic, mysterious tone. The video intercuts performances with moments from the show.

The composer's intent

Economou explained she deliberately avoided an anthem: 'I felt inspired to write an original song from the perspective of the people of Rushville... two space cops who inserted themselves in their town and had a hand in creating a war zone, ultimately making them collateral damage.' She built on her blues-rock/folk theme for Rushville, citing vocal inspiration from Mark Lanegan, Alice in Chains, and Radiohead, and expanded it to reflect the town's 'metaphorical blackest night.' The lyrics, she said, emerged from an Episode 5 scene where John hands a young, broken Maggie her watch and apologizes.

Behind the video

The music video was 'inspired by the gritty, moody aesthetic of the show,' Economou told Collider, featuring Ari Mason and Wayne Ingram on vocals, Jon Monroe on guitars and bass, and Economou on keys, intercut with scenes from Episode 5. Her hope: that fans 'come away feeling more immersed in the musical identity of the story.' It is a neat example of a hit show deepening its world through its score.
