What a stream cipher is
A stream cipher is a method of encryption that processes data continuously, typically combining the data with a stream of pseudo-random values generated from a secret key. Rather than working on fixed-size blocks, it encrypts the data as a flowing stream, often handling one small unit at a time. This makes stream ciphers well suited to situations where data arrives continuously.
The keystream
Central to a stream cipher is the idea of a keystream - a sequence of pseudo-random values produced from the secret key. The cipher combines this keystream with the data to produce the encrypted output. To decrypt, the same keystream is generated from the same key and combined again to recover the original data. The keystream is what turns the key into the means of encryption.
How stream ciphers work
A stream cipher generates its keystream from the secret key and combines it with the data as the data is processed. Because the combination can be reversed using the same keystream, the recipient with the key can decrypt. The security depends on the keystream being unpredictable to anyone without the key, so that an attacker cannot reproduce it or recover the data.
Stream ciphers versus block ciphers
Stream ciphers and block ciphers are the two main types of symmetric encryption. A block cipher encrypts fixed-size blocks, while a stream cipher encrypts data continuously, often bit by bit or in small units. Stream ciphers can be efficient and are useful for streaming data, while block ciphers are common for fixed data. Each suits different needs within cryptography.
Where stream ciphers are used
Stream ciphers are used where data is transmitted continuously or where simple, fast encryption of a flow of data is helpful, such as in some communication systems. Their ability to encrypt data on the fly as it arrives makes them a natural fit for certain applications. Along with block ciphers, they form part of the foundation of symmetric encryption.
Why it matters
Stream ciphers are one of the two fundamental kinds of symmetric encryption. Understanding what a stream cipher is - encrypting data continuously by combining it with a keystream from a secret key - clarifies an important approach to keeping data confidential. For anyone interested in cryptography, it is a valuable concept to understand.
