Code on a screen, representing hexadecimal.

A base-16 number system used throughout computing.

What hexadecimal is

Hexadecimal is a number system that uses sixteen distinct symbols to represent values, as opposed to the ten symbols of the familiar decimal system. It is often called base-16. The symbols include the digits zero through nine plus additional symbols for the values beyond nine. Hexadecimal is widely used in computing because it offers a convenient way to represent numbers and data.

Counting with sixteen symbols

In everyday life we use the decimal system, which has ten symbols. Hexadecimal instead has sixteen, so after reaching nine it continues with extra symbols to represent the next six values before moving to the next place. This larger set of symbols means each hexadecimal digit can represent more distinct values than a single decimal digit, which is part of why it is useful in computing.

Why computing uses hexadecimal

Computers work in binary, using only ones and zeros, but long strings of binary digits are hard for people to read. Hexadecimal provides a more compact representation: a single hexadecimal digit stands for a group of binary digits, so binary data can be written more briefly and clearly. This makes hexadecimal a convenient shorthand for expressing binary values that computers use internally.

A compact view of binary

The close relationship between hexadecimal and binary is a key reason for its popularity in computing. Because each hexadecimal digit corresponds neatly to a fixed group of binary digits, converting between the two is straightforward, and binary data can be shown in a much shorter hexadecimal form. This compactness makes hexadecimal easier to read and write than raw binary.

Where hexadecimal appears

Hexadecimal shows up in many areas of computing where binary data needs to be represented compactly, such as describing memory values, colors, and other low-level data. If you have seen values written with digits and letters together in a technical context, you may well have been looking at hexadecimal. It is a common and practical tool for working with computer data.

Why it matters

Hexadecimal is a widely used number system in computing. Understanding what hexadecimal is - a base-16 system that compactly represents binary data - clarifies how technical values are often written and why letters appear among the digits. For anyone interested in how computers represent numbers and data, it is a valuable concept to understand.
