What a database view is
A database view is a virtual table defined by a query. Rather than storing data of its own, a view presents data drawn from one or more underlying tables according to the query that defines it. When you access a view, the database produces the result from the underlying data. In this way, a view behaves much like a table but is really a saved query presented as one.
A virtual table
The reason a view is called virtual is that it does not hold its own copy of the data. Instead, it is a window onto data that lives in other tables. The view's definition specifies what data to show and how, and the database assembles that result when the view is queried. This lets users work with the view as though it were a table, even though it stores nothing itself.
Why views are useful
Views are useful for simplifying how people interact with data. A complex query can be saved as a view, so users can query the view simply instead of rewriting the complex logic each time. Views can also present just a selected portion of the data, which helps keep things focused. This makes views a convenient way to package and reuse particular ways of looking at data.
Views and security
Views can also help with access control. By exposing only certain columns or rows through a view, a database can let users see a limited slice of the data without giving them access to everything in the underlying tables. This makes views a helpful mechanism for showing people exactly what they need while keeping other data out of view.
Views versus stored data
It is important to remember that an ordinary view does not store data; it reflects the current state of the underlying tables each time it is queried. This keeps the view always consistent with the real data, though it means the query runs each time. A related concept, the materialized view, does store results, trading freshness for speed.
Why it matters
Database views are an important tool for simplifying and controlling access to data. Understanding what a view is - a saved query that acts like a virtual table - clarifies a common way databases present information. For anyone working with databases, it is a valuable concept to understand.
