What a condition variable is
A condition variable is a synchronization tool that lets a thread wait until a particular condition becomes true before continuing. When several threads work together, one thread may need to pause until some condition is met by another thread. A condition variable provides a way for a thread to wait for that condition and to be notified when it may be worth checking again, coordinating their activity.
Waiting for a condition
Sometimes a thread cannot proceed until something else happens, such as data becoming available. Rather than repeatedly checking in a tight loop, which wastes effort, the thread can wait on a condition variable. It effectively goes to sleep until it is signaled. This lets the thread pause efficiently, giving up the processor to others until there is a reason to continue.
Signaling between threads
The counterpart to waiting is signaling. When another thread changes the situation so that the awaited condition might now be true, it signals the condition variable. This wakes up a waiting thread, which can then check the condition and proceed if it is satisfied. This pairing of waiting and signaling is how condition variables coordinate the timing between threads.
Working with a lock
Condition variables are typically used together with a lock that protects the shared data involved in the condition. The lock ensures that checking and changing the condition happen safely, without interference. The condition variable and the lock work hand in hand: the lock guards the data, while the condition variable manages the waiting and signaling around it.
Why condition variables are useful
Condition variables are useful because they let threads wait for conditions efficiently instead of busy-checking. This avoids wasting processor time and provides a clean way to coordinate threads that depend on one another's progress. Understanding condition variables clarifies how threads can cooperate, pausing and resuming at the right moments based on the state of shared data.
Why it matters
The condition variable is an important tool in concurrent programming. Understanding what it is - letting a thread wait until a condition is true and be signaled when it changes - clarifies how threads coordinate efficiently. For anyone interested in concurrency, it is a valuable concept to understand.
