What a MOBA is
A MOBA, short for multiplayer online battle arena, is a strategy game in which two teams, usually of five players each, compete on a fixed map to destroy the opposing team's main base. Each player controls a single powerful character, often called a hero or champion, rather than a whole army. League of Legends and Dota 2 are the best-known examples, and both have huge competitive followings in esports.
How a match works
A typical MOBA map has three lanes connecting the two bases, guarded by defensive towers, with a jungle area of neutral monsters between them. Computer-controlled units called minions march down each lane in waves. Players defeat minions and enemies to earn gold and experience, which they spend on items and new abilities, gradually growing stronger until one team can push through and destroy the other's base.
Heroes and roles
Every hero has a unique set of abilities, and games often offer well over a hundred to choose from. Players usually fill roles: carries that become powerful later in the match, supports that protect and enable teammates, tanks that absorb damage, and junglers who roam the map to help different lanes. Choosing heroes that complement each other is a major part of the strategy before a match even begins.
Where the genre came from
The genre's roots go back to Aeon of Strife, a custom map for StarCraft, but it took off with Defense of the Ancients, a fan-made mod for Warcraft III released in 2003. Its popularity inspired standalone games, including League of Legends in 2009 and Valve's Dota 2 in 2013. Mobile MOBAs such as Arena of Valor and Mobile Legends later brought the format to hundreds of millions of phone players.
Why MOBAs are so demanding
MOBAs are known for a steep learning curve. Players must learn many heroes and items, manage resources, read the map, and coordinate with teammates in real time, all while making quick tactical decisions. Matches commonly last thirty minutes or more, and a single mistake can swing the result. That depth is exactly what makes them so rewarding for dedicated players and so exciting to watch at a high level.
The bottom line
A MOBA is a team strategy game in which each player controls one hero and works with teammates to destroy the enemy base across a map of lanes and towers. Born from a Warcraft III mod, the genre grew into some of the most played and most watched games in the world. Its blend of strategy, teamwork, and mechanical skill explains both its demanding reputation and its lasting appeal.
