A processor chip, representing branch prediction.

How a CPU guesses which way the code will go.

What branch prediction is

Branch prediction is a technique that lets a processor guess the outcome of a decision point in the code, called a branch, before it is actually known. A branch is where the program can go one of two ways depending on a condition. By predicting which way the program will go, the processor can keep working ahead without waiting for the decision to be resolved, improving speed.

The problem of branches

When a processor using pipelining reaches a branch, it faces uncertainty: it does not yet know which instructions come next, because that depends on the branch's outcome. Waiting until the outcome is known would stall the pipeline and waste time. Branch prediction addresses this by having the processor make an educated guess, so it can keep the pipeline full instead of idling.

How prediction helps

If the processor predicts a branch correctly, it has already been working on the right instructions, so no time is lost. This keeps the pipeline flowing smoothly and maintains high performance. Because branches are very common in programs, accurate prediction can make a significant difference to how fast a processor runs, which is why branch prediction is an important feature.

When a guess is wrong

Sometimes the prediction turns out to be wrong. In that case, the processor has been working on the wrong instructions and must discard that work and start over with the correct ones. This mispredict costs time. Modern processors use sophisticated methods to predict branches as accurately as possible, since the fewer wrong guesses there are, the better the performance.

Predicting more accurately

Processors improve branch prediction by using information about how branches have behaved in the past to make better guesses about the future. Because programs often repeat patterns, this history helps the processor predict more accurately. Good branch prediction is a key part of modern processor design, helping keep the pipeline busy and performance high.

Why it matters

Branch prediction is an important technique that helps modern processors stay fast despite the uncertainty of decisions in the code. Understanding what branch prediction is - guessing the outcome of a branch so the processor can keep working - clarifies a clever trick behind CPU performance. For anyone curious about how processors work, it is a valuable concept.
