Electronic components, representing a relay.

An electrically operated switch.

What a relay is

A relay is an electrically operated switch. Instead of being flipped by hand, it is controlled by an electrical signal, which opens or closes a separate circuit. This lets a small, low-power signal control a different circuit that may carry much more power. The relay acts as a go-between, allowing one circuit to switch another on or off without a direct connection between them.

How a relay works

A common type of relay uses an electromagnet to move a switch. When a current flows through the relay's control side, it creates a magnetic field that physically moves a contact, opening or closing the switched circuit. When the control current stops, the contact returns to its resting position. This mechanism turns an electrical signal into the movement that operates the switch.

Controlling big circuits with small signals

A key benefit of a relay is that a small signal can control a much larger electrical load. The control side needs only enough power to operate the switch, while the switched side can handle higher currents or voltages. This makes relays useful whenever a low-power device, such as a controller, needs to turn on or off something that draws significant power.

Isolation between circuits

Because the control side and the switched side of a relay are separate, a relay also provides isolation between them. The circuit doing the controlling is not directly connected to the circuit being switched. This separation can protect sensitive control electronics from the higher-power circuit and is another reason relays are valued in many designs.

Where relays are used

Relays are found in a wide range of equipment, from home appliances and cars to industrial machinery and control systems. Anywhere a small signal needs to switch a larger circuit, or where isolation between circuits is helpful, a relay may be used. Their simple, reliable switching behavior has kept them in widespread use across many kinds of electrical and electronic systems.

Why it matters

The relay is a fundamental component that lets small signals control larger circuits safely. Understanding what a relay is - an electrically operated switch that uses one circuit to switch another - clarifies how control systems turn things on and off. For anyone interested in electronics, the relay is a useful concept to understand.
