What fastboot is
Fastboot is both a protocol and a command-line tool for communicating with an Android device's bootloader from a computer over USB. While ADB talks to a phone once Android is running, fastboot works at a lower level, before the operating system starts. It is part of Google's free Android SDK Platform Tools, and it is essential for unlocking bootloaders, installing custom recoveries, and restoring a phone's factory software images.
Entering fastboot mode
To use it, the phone must be in fastboot mode, sometimes called bootloader mode. On many devices you reach it by holding the power and volume down buttons while the phone starts, or by running adb reboot bootloader from a connected computer. The phone then shows a simple screen and waits for commands. Running fastboot devices on the computer confirms that the connection works before you do anything else.
Common commands
A handful of commands cover most tasks. On many modern devices, fastboot flashing unlock unlocks the bootloader, while older phones used fastboot oem unlock. fastboot flash writes an image file to a named partition, such as boot or recovery. fastboot boot starts a phone from an image without installing it, which is handy for testing a custom recovery, and fastboot reboot restarts the phone normally when you are done.
Unlocking and your data
Unlocking the bootloader through fastboot almost always erases everything on the phone. This is a deliberate security measure: it stops someone who steals a phone from unlocking it to get at the owner's data. Many manufacturers also require you to switch on OEM unlocking in Developer options first, and some require an unlock code or a waiting period from the manufacturer. Back up anything important before you start.
Samsung, fastbootd, and other differences
Not every phone uses fastboot. Samsung devices rely on their own Download mode instead, usually flashed with a Windows tool called Odin. Newer Android phones also include fastbootd, a version of fastboot that runs inside the recovery environment rather than the bootloader, introduced with Android 10 to handle dynamic partitions. Instructions for a specific device will tell you which mode each step requires.
The bottom line
Fastboot is the low-level link between a computer and an Android phone's bootloader, used to unlock devices, flash partition images, and boot custom recoveries. It is powerful and unforgiving, since the wrong image on the wrong partition can stop a phone from starting. Follow instructions written for your exact device, double-check every file before flashing, and fastboot becomes an indispensable tool.
