Android's built-in defense against harmful apps.

What Play Protect is

Google Play Protect is the malware protection built into Android devices that include Google's services. Google introduced it in 2017, bringing several existing security features together under one name. It checks apps for harmful behavior, both before you install them from Google Play and while they sit on your phone, and it runs automatically in the background without needing a separate antivirus app.

How apps are scanned

Apps submitted to Google Play are checked before they become available to download. Once installed, apps continue to be scanned on the device itself, including apps you sideload from other sources. Play Protect compares what it finds against known threats and uses machine learning to spot suspicious behavior, so it can catch apps that change after installation or come from places Google never reviewed.

What happens when it finds a threat

If Play Protect detects a potentially harmful app, it shows a warning and may block the installation altogether. For apps that are already installed, it can notify you and recommend removing them. In serious cases it can disable or remove a known harmful app automatically, which keeps protecting you even if an app turns out to be malicious only after you installed it on your phone.

Checking that it is on

Play Protect is switched on by default, but it is worth confirming. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, and choose Play Protect to see when your apps were last scanned and to start a scan manually. From the settings there you can make sure scanning is enabled, and decide whether to send unknown apps to Google to help it improve harmful app detection.

Its limits

Play Protect is a strong baseline, but it is not a guarantee. New malware sometimes slips through before it is recognized, and some harmful apps succeed by tricking people into granting dangerous permissions rather than by exploiting a weakness. Installing apps from reputable sources, reading permission requests carefully, and keeping Android and your apps updated still matter, even with Play Protect running.

The bottom line

Google Play Protect quietly checks the apps on your Android phone, both from Google Play and from elsewhere, and steps in when it finds something harmful. Because it is built in and on by default, most people benefit from it without doing anything. A quick look at its settings, plus some caution about where your apps come from, gives you solid everyday protection.
