What transfer learning is
Transfer learning is a machine learning technique in which knowledge gained while solving one task is reused to help with a related task. Instead of training a model from scratch for every new problem, transfer learning takes what a model has already learned and applies it to a new but related task. This can make learning the new task faster and require less data.
Reusing learned knowledge
When a model is trained on a task, it learns patterns and representations that capture useful information. Transfer learning takes advantage of this by carrying that learned knowledge over to a new task. Because related tasks often share underlying structure, the knowledge from the first task can give the model a head start on the second, rather than beginning with no knowledge at all.
Why it is efficient
Training models from scratch can require large amounts of data and effort. Transfer learning improves efficiency by building on existing knowledge, so the new task may be learned with less data and less training. This is especially valuable when data for the new task is limited, since the knowledge transferred from the original task helps compensate for having fewer examples.
When transfer learning helps
Transfer learning is most helpful when the original task and the new task are related, so that the learned knowledge is relevant. The more the tasks share in common, the more useful the transferred knowledge tends to be. When the tasks are too different, the benefit is smaller. Choosing an appropriate source of knowledge is therefore part of applying transfer learning effectively.
Where transfer learning is used
Transfer learning is widely used in modern machine learning, particularly where training from scratch would be costly or data is scarce. It allows practitioners to build on powerful models that have already learned a great deal. Understanding transfer learning clarifies how AI systems can be adapted to new tasks efficiently by reusing prior learning.
Why it matters
Transfer learning is an important technique in machine learning. Understanding what it is - reusing knowledge from one task to learn a related task - clarifies how models can be built efficiently without starting from scratch. For anyone interested in how machine learning works, it is a valuable concept to understand.
