An abstract mind concept, representing precision and recall.

Two ways to measure how well a model finds things.

What precision and recall are

Precision and recall are two measures used to evaluate how well a classification model performs, each capturing a different aspect of its accuracy. Precision asks how many of the items the model identified as positive are actually positive, while recall asks how many of the actual positive items the model managed to find. Together, they give a fuller picture than accuracy alone.

Precision: how many are correct

Precision focuses on the correctness of the model's positive predictions. Of all the cases the model labeled as positive, precision measures the fraction that truly are positive. High precision means that when the model says something is positive, it is usually right. Precision is important when the cost of a false positive - wrongly flagging something - is high.

Recall: how many are found

Recall focuses on coverage. Of all the cases that are actually positive, recall measures the fraction the model successfully identified. High recall means the model catches most of the true positives, missing few. Recall is important when the cost of a false negative - failing to catch something that should have been flagged - is high.

Balancing the two

Precision and recall often involve a trade-off: improving one can reduce the other. A model can be made very cautious to boost precision, but it may then miss cases and lower recall, and vice versa. The right balance depends on the task and which kind of error matters more. Considering both together gives a more complete view of performance.

Why precision and recall matter

Precision and recall matter because they reveal aspects of model performance that a single accuracy figure can hide, especially when the classes are imbalanced. They help practitioners judge whether a model fits the needs of a task. Understanding what precision and recall are clarifies how to evaluate a classifier more meaningfully than with accuracy alone.

Why it matters

Precision and recall are fundamental metrics in machine learning. Understanding what they are - measures of correct positive predictions and of positives found - clarifies how models are evaluated beyond simple accuracy. For anyone interested in machine learning, they are valuable concepts to understand.
