An analytics dashboard, representing knowledge distillation.

Shrinking a big AI into a small, fast one.

What knowledge distillation is

Knowledge distillation is a technique for making AI models smaller and faster without losing too much of their ability. It works by training a small model, called the student, to imitate the behavior of a large, powerful model, called the teacher. The aim is to transfer much of what the big model knows into a compact one that is far cheaper and quicker to run, while keeping most of its performance.

The problem it solves

The most capable AI models are often enormous, needing powerful hardware and a lot of energy to run, which makes them expensive and impractical for many uses, such as running on a phone. Simply making a smaller model from scratch usually means weaker results. Knowledge distillation offers a middle path: capture the strengths of a large model in a small one, getting a better small model than training alone would produce.

How it works

In distillation, the large teacher model processes data and produces its outputs, and the small student model is trained to match those outputs rather than just the raw correct answers. The teacher's responses carry rich information, including how confident it is across different possibilities, which gives the student more to learn from than plain labels. By imitating the teacher closely, the student absorbs much of its knowledge.

Teacher and student

The teacher-student framing captures the idea well. The teacher is a large, well-trained model that performs excellently but is costly to use. The student is a smaller model that learns by observing how the teacher responds, effectively being taught by it. The result is a student that punches above its weight, performing much better than a small model trained on its own would, thanks to the guidance of its larger mentor.

Why it matters

Knowledge distillation is key to bringing powerful AI to everyday devices and services. It lets companies offer capable models that run on phones, respond quickly, and cost less to operate, by distilling giant models into practical sizes. As demand grows for AI that is fast, affordable, and able to run close to the user, distillation has become an important tool for making advanced capabilities widely accessible.

The bottom line

Knowledge distillation trains a small student model to imitate a large teacher model, transferring much of its ability into a form that runs faster and cheaper. By learning from the teacher's rich responses rather than plain answers, the student outperforms what small-model training alone could achieve. Understanding it explains how powerful AI is shrunk down to run on phones and other everyday devices.
